Back pain and sciatica are two common conditions that affect many individuals, often causing discomfort and restricting mobility. Back pain refers to pain experienced in the back region, which can range from a dull ache to sharp, debilitating sensations. Sciatica, on the other hand, specifically refers to pain that travels along the path of the sciatic nerve, typically radiating from the lower back through the hips and buttocks, down the leg. Both conditions may arise concurrently and can significantly impact daily activities.

What are the common causes?

Several factors can contribute to the onset of back pain and sciatica. Common causes include muscle or ligament strains, disc problems and nerve irritation.

What are the signs and symptoms of back pain/sciatica?

Signs and symptoms of back pain can vary widely but often include localised discomfort, stiffness, or difficulty in movement. Sciatica is characterised by a sharp, burning, or numbing pain that may radiate down the leg. Additional symptoms may include tingling sensations, muscle weakness, or difficulty in controlling leg movements. Knowing these signs can help in seeking timely treatment and preventing complications.

How can I help myself?

There are several ways to help yourself alleviate back pain and sciatica. Engaging in gentle exercises or stretches can enhance flexibility and strengthen the supporting muscles of the back. Heat or cold therapy can also provide relief being careful not to burn yourself. Over-the-counter pain relief medications when used appropriately.
